Seniors Count! project update
Written by Tom Jankowski
Wednesday, 07 March 2012 00:00

Welcome to Seniors Count!  If you have come here due to something you have read recently in the Detroit-area media, we are very glad you've taken the time to visit.  Please feel free to explore the site and learn more about Seniors Count! and about our aging population in Southeast Michigan.  You may notice that much of the content here is aging a bit itself.  That is because, since our funding has run out, we just don't have as much time to keep the pages up-to-date because we're too busy scrambling to raise resources and make sure our critical but behind-the-scenes data work continues.  If you are looking for our county data sheets, white papers, or other reports, just click on "Data Downloads" and browse through the archives.  If you can't find what you are looking for, please feel free to contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Seniors Count! Health Profiles Released
Written by Carrie Leach
Tuesday, 13 September 2011 00:00

Seniors Count! staff continues working on our Community Advisory Committee request to supply our network with data, this time on health. Because this data domain is sizable we have broken up the collection into three sections. The first is Behavioral Risk Factors, the second is  Nursing Homes and the third is Health which includes information on access, utilization and wellness. The BRFS data was posted on our website in March and the Nursing Home data was posted in June. Our newest release are the County Health Profile sheets.

The Health Profiles include information at the county level on cancer, hospitalizations, leading diagnosis for hospitalizations, mortality, disability, access to fresh food, and National Aging Program Information System (NAPIS) data.

To download Health data for Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, or Wayne Counties, please visit our data download center and click on the respective county.

Invisible Poverty: New Measure Unveils Financial Hardship in Michigan's Older Adult Population
Written by Tom Jankowski
Wednesday, 20 July 2011 11:53

The Seniors Count! project has released our third working paper, on the economic security of men and women 65 years of age or older in our region. In this report, we use a recently developed measure, the Elder Economic Security Standard™ Index, or Elder Index , to evaluate the economic security of Michigan residents age 65 and older. The Elder Index benchmarks the actual costs of living for older adults, taking into account expenses for housing, food, transportation, health care, and other necessities at a basic standard of living. Our analysis shows that Michigan seniors face a much more widespread risk of financial hardship than previously understood.

The sheets include information about the location, program participation (i.e. Medicaid, Medicare), number of certified beds, whether the facility is privately or publicly owned as well as ratings up to five stars for their performance overall and individually for health inspection, staffing, and quality measures.
